Experts warn that this season could see more hurricanes due to the effects of warm sea surface temperatures
(SDGTALKING) By Bunyamin Surmeli – Meteorologists and climate experts are expecting the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season to be above normal. Forecasts indicate that hurricanes could rapidly intensify, particularly in the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean, and the Gulf of Mexico, due to sea surface temperatures that are well above average.
AccuWeather, a U.S.-based weather analysis company, announced in its latest assessment that it expects 13 to 18 named storms during the 2025 hurricane season. It is noted that 7 to 10 of these storms could reach hurricane strength, with sea temperatures in the Gulf and Caribbean regions being “well above historical averages.” The company’s press release stated, “These temperatures will persist throughout the year, creating an environment that is highly conducive to the rapid and intense development of storms.”
NOAA warns of 3 to 5 major hurricanes
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts 13 to 19 named storms for the 2025 season, with six to 10 of these becoming hurricanes and three to five becoming major hurricanes of category 3 or higher.
NOAA emphasized that hurricanes with wind speeds exceeding 111 miles per hour pose a serious threat.
According to NOAA data, winds exceeding 74 miles per hour are classified as hurricane-force winds, and storms reaching this level can cause serious damage on land.
University of Colorado: 17 storms, 4 major hurricanes
Researchers at the University of Colorado, known for their hurricane season analyses, also predict 17 named storms for 2025. According to the university’s forecast, nine of these will be hurricanes, and four will reach major hurricane status. The university announced that it will update its predictions on June 11.
In the 2024 hurricane season, 18 named storms occurred. Eleven of these reached hurricane strength, while five were recorded as major hurricanes. During the season, the state of Florida faced three major hurricanes.
Weather experts and disaster management agencies have reminded the public that the hurricane season officially begins on Sunday, June 1, and runs through November 30, urging residents in coastal areas to prepare in advance. They have noted that rapid hurricane development triggered by warm sea surfaces could lead to sudden evacuations.
