Environmental activists in New York protested against major insurance companies for their support of fossil fuel companies and projects.
The crowd gathered on the steps of the National Public Library on 5th Avenue in Manhattan to send a message to insurance companies that fossil fuels should be left in the ground to ensure people’s future, and that companies trying to extract them should not be insured.
Called by the non-governmental organization (NGO) “Insure Our Future”, which includes many environmental groups, the activists expressed their opposition to insuring new and expanded coal, oil and gas projects.
After a while, the protesters marched and tried to enter the headquarters of major insurance companies American International Group and Chubb Group in Manhattan, but police intervened.
The environmental NGO’s statement read as follows:
“Insurance companies play an important role in determining the scale of the climate impacts we all face. Without insurance, fossil fuel companies cannot dig new coal mines, build new pipelines, or expand oil and gas production. Once built, fossil fuel infrastructure traps us in dirty and expensive energy that causes climate change and harms public health.”
- “Our best insurance is to keep fossil fuels underground”
“We call on insurance companies to immediately stop insuring new fossil fuels and phase out support for existing coal, oil and gas projects,” the organization’s website reads.
Insure Our Future operates as a non-governmental organization that holds the insurance industry accountable for its role in the climate crisis and raises its voice through global protests.
Insure Our Future, which is also supported by environmental groups such as Greenpeace, Sierra Club and Future Coalition, includes a total of 28 organizations with similar goals. (AA)
