NEW YORK – Bünyamin Sürmeli – A block away from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s home in Grand Army Plaza, thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters, mostly Jewish New Yorkers, organized what they called a “Rally in the Streets to Stop Israel’s Armament” on the second night of Passover.
The protest, organized by the NGO Jewish Voice for Peace, demanded that “the U.S. Senate stop the nearly $27 billion foreign aid package to Israel.
The protest featured a number of speakers, including journalist and author Naomi Klein, Palestinian activist Linda Sarsour, and several Jewish students suspended from Columbia University, where students organized a Gaza solidarity camp.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) arrested nearly 300 protesters as part of a heavy security presence.
