NEW YORK – Bünyamin Sürmeli – Demonstrations in support of Palestine are becoming more widespread and violent at universities in the United States.
There is great interest and participation in demonstrations in support of Palestine, especially among young people. Most recently, an on-campus sit-in at Columbia University, known as the “Gaza Solidarity Camp,” has attracted the attention of students and the media.
In a letter to the New York Police Department (NYPD), Columbia University Rector Minouche Shafik stated that all students who participated in the protest have been suspended. She stated that these students create a “security concern” on campus and threaten the normal functioning of the university. More than 100 students were detained after the NYPD was asked to help remove them.
Following these detentions, leading US universities such as Yale and Harvard began organizing demonstrations in support of the students at Columbia University.
In addition, the recent 26 billion dollar aid package approved by US President Joe Biden for Israel, and the forced support for this war with American tax dollars, has caused widespread public outrage.
Pro-peace Jewish non-governmental organizations are also participating in the daily demonstrations. These demonstrations involve not only university students, but also the general public.
In major states such as New York, Washington DC, and California, local security forces are increasingly cracking down on the ongoing demonstrations. Simultaneously with these interventions, anger and unrest among protesters has increased.
