Food waste can sound like a huge global problem, but UNEP’s latest household advice makes one thing clear: a lot of it starts with small daily decisions. What we buy, cook, store and throw away at home adds up over time.

That is why this story is simple on purpose. You do not need a perfect zero-waste lifestyle to waste less food. You just need a few habits that are easy enough to repeat.

Seven ways to waste less food

  1. Buy a little more carefully. Make a short list before shopping so you do not come home with food you never planned to use.

  2. Check what you already have. Look in the fridge and cupboards before buying more of the same thing.

  3. Store food better. Keep fresh produce where it lasts longer and learn which foods need the fridge and which do not.

  4. Cook the right amount. Making slightly less food can be smarter than cooking too much and forgetting the leftovers.
