The US is experiencing much warmer temperatures than expected in February

While temperatures in the US were above seasonal norms in February, the heat wave took effect from the southern regions of the country to the Canadian border.

Unusually high temperatures reached 38 degrees Celsius in the southernmost state of Texas and 22 degrees Celsius in the northernmost state of Illinois.

In a statement made by the US National Weather Service, it was stated that according to the preliminary data obtained, air temperatures reached “the highest level” in “at least 73 locations” across the country today.

It said the rapid rise in temperatures was due to humid air and an “unusual low pressure system” pulling warm air from the south of the country northward.

The statement pointed to an increasingly warmer climate, with the winter of 2023-2024 expected to be one of the warmest winters ever for the US.

“Many of the world’s most snow-dense river basins are on the verge of rapid melting,” concluded an article published in Nature at the beginning of January, which compiled studies on snow levels since 1981.

The article also mentioned that snow masses in the US river basins that are covered with snow are shrinking and that climate change is responsible for this. (AA)
