(UNITED NATIONS) By Bünyamin Sürmeli – Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations, and Ambassador Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, along with some 40 other ambassadors, issued a press statement on artificial intelligence following the UN Security Council meeting. In the statement, they presented a joint statement on artificial intelligence and called on the international community to mobilize for the safe and ethical use of this technology.
Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield pointed out that AI can also play an important role in security issues, noting that it is important to discuss how AI can be used in areas such as counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and arms control. However, he also emphasized that the use of this technology by malicious actors could have serious consequences and urged the international community to be more cautious about artificial intelligence.
Ambassador Hilale of Morocco highlighted the opportunities that artificial intelligence offers to developing countries, particularly in Africa. He pointed to the potential benefits of AI in areas such as agriculture, health, education, and the economy, and said it could support sustainable development for these countries. He also emphasized that AI technologies can play an important role in reducing social and economic inequalities in these countries.
This joint statement emphasized the need for the international community to act with a shared vision and cooperation on artificial intelligence. This statement, made on an important platform of the UN Security Council, once again demonstrated the importance of addressing the concerns and opportunities of artificial intelligence in an international framework.
It is believed that if the declaration is adopted, member states will create a common vision on artificial intelligence and maximize the potential benefits of this technology. This is considered an important step for the common good of humanity around the world.
