UNITED NATIONS – Bünyamin Sürmeli – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned Thursday’s Israeli air strike on a school run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in the Gaza Strip.
Dozens of displaced people were killed in the attack.
At the daily press briefing, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric called the Israeli attack “another tragic and horrific” reminder of the price paid by civilians in Gaza. Dujarric said the school, which was being used as a shelter, was trying to provide basic services to civilians.
Earlier on Thursday, at least 39 displaced Palestinians were killed in an Israeli airstrike on a school housing thousands of IDPs in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. Asked if Guterres condemned the attack, Dujarric said, “Of course he condemns it.
There are no education services in Gaza, and 300,000 children receiving education from UNRWA have no access to education, Dujarric said, adding that schools have turned into shelters. “There is no safe place in Gaza,” Dujarric said, noting that more than 36,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in sustained attacks by Israeli forces since October 7 last year.
Referring to Israel’s allegations of Hamas members in the school, Dujarric said, “You can listen to what other people say and report it. You can report what I say and make your own analysis. What I can tell you is that a lot of civilians died, a lot of children died,” Dujarric said.
