By Bünyamin Sürmeli – June 5 was World Environment Day. The United Nations declared World Environment Day in 1972. This year, a summit was held at Karapınar SPP, the largest solar power plant in Europe, hosted by Kalyon PV with the participation of the UN Habitat delegation. The theme of the summit was “Designing a Sustainable Future Together” and I participated as a speaker and moderator.
I had the opportunity to visit Kalyon PV Factory and Kalyon Karapınar SPP. I found 2 proud centers that can be shown to the world as an example for a sustainable future and against climate change. One is a factory that produces everything a power plant needs with up to 90% local content and builds a power plant, and the other is an SPP that produces energy almost at the capacity of a nuclear power plant but is a completely environmentally friendly energy source.
In addition to protecting the atmosphere with renewable energy, the solar panels shade the soil, increase water retention and revitalize the microclimate. Many endemic species that had disappeared have been revived. In fact, the region has become so green that a grazing project has been initiated; sheep and lambs not only feed but also clean themselves under the solar panels, eliminating the need for mowing. The Karapınar SPP is the largest in Europe. It is very important both in terms of the renewable energy we produce (as one of the countries most affected by climate change in the world) and as an example for other investors in our country and the world.
In addition, high-pressure areas are expanding and intensifying as a result of climate change. As a result, pollutants are trapped in the air and we breathe polluted air. Since renewable energy does not emit particles, the air remains clean even under high pressure. The spread of solar energy applications in cities is very important and necessary for a better quality of healthy life. There is a one-to-one relationship between air pollution and heart cancer, diabetes, neurological and metabolic diseases.
The Kalyon PV & UN Habita World Environment Day Summit was attended by many United Nations members from different regions of the world. It was both a good promotion for our country and an exchange of information with 5 panels.
We celebrated a useful, communicative and green World Environment Day…
