A landmark international agreement was adopted this week at the Global Gender Forum, setting forth a comprehensive policy framework to accelerate progress on Sustainable Development Goal 5. The framework addresses systemic barriers to gender equality, including workplace discrimination, unequal access to education, and gender-based violence. It calls for binding commitments from member states to implement gender-responsive budgeting and strengthen legal protections.
According to UN Women, recent global data shows that while female participation in education and labor markets has improved, women still earn 23% less than men on average and occupy fewer leadership positions. The new policy aims to close these gaps by fostering inclusive economic opportunities and promoting social norms change. “This framework offers a clear roadmap to dismantle entrenched inequalities,” said Maria Lopez, a gender policy expert.
Civil society groups welcomed the initiative but urged continuous monitoring and accountability mechanisms to ensure tangible outcomes. The forum also highlighted the importance of intersectional approaches to address the diverse experiences of women worldwide.
