UN Launches Global Campaign to Combat Plastic Pollution in Oceans

On April 16, 2026, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) unveiled a new global campaign aimed at reducing plastic pollution in oceans, aligning with SDG 14 on life below water. The campaign seeks to mobilize governments, industries, and communities to reduce single-use plastics and improve waste management.

The initiative includes commitments to expand marine protected areas, enhance recycling infrastructure, and promote alternatives to plastic packaging. Recent data estimates that 11 million metric tons of plastic enter the oceans annually, threatening marine biodiversity and livelihoods.

UNEP Executive Director Inger Andersen emphasized, “Protecting our oceans requires urgent, collective action. This campaign represents a critical step toward healthier marine ecosystems and sustainable blue economies.” Partnerships with private sector actors and civil society will be key to driving behavioral change and technological innovation.
