Gender Equality Progress Remains Uneven, UN Women Calls for Accelerated Action

UN Women’s latest report reveals that while there have been notable advances in gender equality worldwide, progress remains uneven and insufficient to achieve SDG 5: Gender Equality by 2030. The report highlights persistent gaps in economic participation, political representation, and gender-based violence.

Globally, women’s labor force participation has increased marginally, yet they remain overrepresented in informal sectors and underrepresented in leadership roles. Additionally, one in three women continues to experience physical or sexual violence, emphasizing the need for comprehensive protective measures.

UN Women Executive Director Sima Sami Bahous urged governments, civil society, and the private sector to intensify efforts, saying, “Achieving true gender equality requires dismantling systemic barriers and ensuring inclusive policies.” The report calls for targeted investments in education, healthcare, and legal reforms to close persistent gaps.
