(SDGTALKING) – By Bunyamin Surmeli – Ahead of world leaders’ gathering in New York in September, the United Nations highlighted the latest status of the Sustainable Development Goals. Current data shows that only 36 percent of the assessable goals are on track or showing moderate progress.
As time runs out for the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, the United Nations has called on world leaders to put the SDGs back at the center of global decision-making processes ahead of the 81st UN General Assembly in September.
According to an assessment released by the UN on September 1, progress has been made over the past 10 years in expanding access to education, clean water, health services, and digital connectivity, benefiting billions of people.
However, the global picture still falls short of the targets.
According to the UN Sustainable Development Goals Report 2026, 36 percent of the 139 targets for which trend data is available are on track or showing moderate progress.
Financing gaps, climate-related disasters, rising debt burdens, conflicts, and inequalities are among the main obstacles to achieving the 2030 goals.
One of the key milestones on this year’s sustainable development agenda will be the 2026 SDG Moment, to be held on September 18 in the UN General Assembly Hall in New York.
Under the theme “Together, We Can Get There,” the event will address countries’ implementation of the SDGs, financing needs, inequalities, the debt problem, and the impact of artificial intelligence on sustainable development.
From September 21–25, the SDG Media Zone will be held at UN Headquarters.
