Pacific Island Nations Sound Alarm on Climate Change: “Rising Seas Threaten Our Future”

Pacific island nations have called on the international community to take stronger action against climate change, warning that rising sea levels are threatening coastal communities, agricultural land, and freshwater resources.

Climate discussions held in the Pacific region, bringing together representatives from more than 50 countries, focused on the growing impact of global warming on small island developing states.

During meetings in Fiji, participants highlighted the increasing risks posed by rising sea levels, particularly to vulnerable coastal communities.

Despite contributing relatively little to historical global greenhouse gas emissions, Pacific island nations are among the countries facing some of the most severe consequences of climate change.

Calls for Increased Climate Finance

Pacific island nations are urging the international community to increase financial support for coastal protection projects, climate-resilient infrastructure, clean drinking water systems, and disaster preparedness initiatives.

Addressing climate-related loss and damage remains another key priority in international negotiations, as vulnerable nations seek greater financial assistance to cope with the impacts of global warming.

The demands of Pacific island nations are expected to return to the international agenda during the COP31 UN Climate Change Conference in Antalya, Türkiye, where climate finance, adaptation, and support for vulnerable countries are set to be among the major issues under discussion.
