The United Nations has warned that the goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels is at serious risk. Ahead of COP31, which will be hosted by Türkiye, the UN has emphasized the urgent need for countries to strengthen their climate policies.
The United Nations (UN) has warned that the international community is entering a critical phase in the fight against global warming. Assessments conducted as part of preparations for COP31 indicate that the current pace of greenhouse gas emissions reductions is insufficient to keep the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C target within reach.
Climate talks held in the Pacific region also addressed the challenges facing small island nations, whose very existence is threatened by rising sea levels. Countries bearing some of the most severe impacts of climate change called on developed economies to take greater responsibility for reducing emissions and providing climate finance.
All Eyes Turn to COP31 in Antalya
The 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), set to take place in Türkiye, is expected to serve as a key platform for turning countries’ climate commitments into concrete action.
The UN stressed that the possibility of temporarily exceeding the 1.5°C threshold must not be used as a justification for abandoning climate action. It also highlighted the urgent need to scale up investment in clean energy and rapidly reduce emissions from fossil fuels.
