COP31 Approaches: Why Climate Action Must Deliver for People and Planet

World leaders, climate negotiators and civil society representatives are preparing to gather in Antalya, Türkiye, for COP31, the United Nations Climate Change Conference scheduled for November 9–20, 2026.

The summit comes amid mounting concerns over extreme weather, rising economic losses and unequal access to the resources needed to respond to climate change.

A central challenge for COP31 will be turning existing climate commitments into measurable progress. Governments are expected to address clean energy deployment, climate adaptation, financial support for vulnerable countries and the transition toward more sustainable economies.

For developing nations and communities disproportionately affected by climate impacts, access to affordable financing and climate-resilient infrastructure remains essential.

The conference will also highlight the relationship between climate action and broader development priorities, including public health, food security, poverty reduction and economic opportunity.

As negotiations approach, attention is turning toward whether governments can strengthen international cooperation and develop practical approaches to implementation.

The outcome of COP31 could influence how countries translate climate commitments into policies that protect both people and the planet.
