Recent data released by the World Bank indicates a notable decline in global poverty rates, with the extreme poverty headcount ratio falling from 9.8% in 2023 to 8.1% in 2025. This marks the fastest rate of poverty reduction seen in the last decade, driven by increased economic activity and targeted social protection programs. Low-income countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia have shown significant improvements, although challenges remain in fragile contexts.
Experts emphasize that while progress is encouraging, the persistence of inequality and the impacts of climate change continue to threaten vulnerable populations. The introduction of innovative financing mechanisms and enhanced international cooperation are credited with helping countries scale up social safety nets.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated, “Sustained efforts are vital to ensure that no one is left behind, especially as economic uncertainties and environmental crises persist.” Governments and development partners are urged to maintain momentum to achieve SDG 1: No Poverty by 2030.
