Recent reports by UNICEF highlight that conflict and displacement in the Middle East are reversing hard-won gains in girls’ education. Millions of girls remain out of school due to insecurity, economic hardship, and cultural barriers exacerbated by ongoing crises.
In Syria and Yemen, school attendance rates for girls have dropped by more than 15% since 2020, with many facing heightened risks of early marriage and exploitation. Humanitarian agencies emphasize the need for targeted interventions, including safe learning environments, psychosocial support, and community engagement.
UNICEF’s regional director, Geert Cappelaere, stated, “Education is a lifeline for girls caught in conflict, offering protection and hope. Urgent and sustained investment is essential to prevent a lost generation.” Efforts are underway to deploy remote learning technologies and local partnerships to bridge gaps amid instability.
