The increasing energy demand worldwide brings along issues such as climate change and environmental destruction. Addressing this issue in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has become a necessity at both local and global levels.
As of 2021, global energy consumption reached 600 exajoules. This demand is rapidly increasing, especially in developing countries. For instance, regions in India and Africa are increasingly meeting their energy needs due to growing populations and industrialization processes. However, this increase is often not supported by the adequate development of renewable energy sources.
Experts emphasize the need to develop alternative energy sources that can replace fossil fuels. Renewable energy sources offer an environmentally friendly and sustainable solution. Wind and solar energy hold significant potential in this regard. For example, in 2020, global solar energy capacity reached 710 gigawatts, and this number continues to grow each year. However, more investment and political support are needed to accelerate this transformation process.
Education also plays a critical role in this transformation. Raising awareness among younger generations about energy efficiency and sustainable energy sources could be key to meeting future energy needs. Many universities are increasing awareness in this area by offering courses in sustainable energy. Additionally, it is important for local governments to review energy policies and promote the use of renewable energy as significant steps toward social change.
Moreover, gender equality should not be overlooked in meeting energy needs. Increasing women’s participation in the energy sector can provide significant economic and social benefits. The involvement of women leaders in sustainable energy projects will contribute to producing more effective solutions in communities.
In summary, every step taken in response to the increasing energy demand plays an important role in combating climate change and achieving sustainable development goals. How can we accelerate the energy transition and achieve it sustainably?
