With weekday power surges straining grids in cities like Madrid and Seoul, experts argue that national energy platforms—often announced with ambitious 2030 or 2050 targets—are insufficient without transparent modelling that integrates local realities.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has highlighted that only 28% of countries have published detailed transition models calibrated for their domestic infrastructure, despite growing investments in renewables and storage. In France, for example, the Energy Transition Model (ETM) has been central to recent debates after July’s heatwave exposed shortfalls in grid flexibility and demand-side management.

A key concern flagged by the UN Economic Commission for Europe last Friday is the gap between stated ambitions and actual deployment rates. While Kazakhstan’s government maintains its 2035 renewables share target, grid operators report that fluctuating summer wind patterns have complicated the integration of new capacity, underlining the need for predictive, region-specific modelling.

Critics warn that without rigorous, open-source models, governments risk overpromising on decarbonisation while underdelivering on reliability and affordability. In the run-up to the autumn policy cycle, industry associations in the EU are urging member states to publish their underlying assumptions and scenario analyses, rather than relying on generic “platform announcements”.

With SDG 7’s 2030 deadline looming and summer demand peaking this month, the call for robust, transparent energy transition models is moving from think tank white papers to the center of national policy debates.
