Small Island States Seek Greater Support in Accessing Climate Finance

Small island states, among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, are facing growing challenges in accessing climate finance, an issue gaining prominence on the United Nations’ sustainable development agenda. Rising disaster risks and high adaptation costs are increasing the need for international support.

Small island states face a range of climate-related threats, including rising sea levels, extreme weather events, coastal erosion, and declining freshwater resources.

Their limited economic resources and high exposure to natural disasters make it difficult to secure the financing needed for infrastructure investments.

Climate Finance Demands on the COP31 Agenda

Climate adaptation projects, coastal protection systems, renewable energy investments, and disaster-resilient infrastructure are among the key priorities for small island states.

Efforts under the United Nations framework aim to improve developing countries’ access to affordable financing.

At COP31, scheduled to take place in Türkiye, the distribution of climate finance and support for vulnerable countries are expected to be among the key issues in international negotiations.
