A recent horizon scan published in Forest Policy and Economics identifies ten key forces—from political shifts and financial innovations to technological advancements—that are simultaneously influencing forest ecosystems and the communities reliant on them. These interconnected drivers underscore the increasing uncertainty surrounding forest conservation and sustainable management efforts.
Political dynamics remain a major determinant of forest outcomes. Changes in governance, policy priorities, and international agreements can either bolster or undermine forest protection initiatives. At the same time, financial mechanisms—such as green bonds, carbon markets, and impact investing—are evolving rapidly, creating new incentives for sustainable forestry but also raising concerns about equity and effectiveness.
Technological progress introduces both promise and risk. Innovations like remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and blockchain offer enhanced monitoring, transparency, and traceability, potentially improving forest management and combating illegal activities. However, technology alone cannot address underlying socio-economic drivers of deforestation and degradation.
