UN Report Highlights Progress and Gaps in Global Education Access

A new United Nations report released this week provides a comprehensive overview of global education access, revealing significant strides alongside persistent inequalities. The Global Education Monitoring Report 2026 finds that while primary school enrollment rates have increased to 91%, challenges remain in ensuring quality education and inclusion for marginalized groups.

Children from low-income families, girls in rural areas, children with disabilities, and refugees continue to face barriers to learning. The report underscores that more than 60 million children of primary school age remain out of school, with conflict and displacement being major factors. It calls for targeted investments and policies to bridge these gaps, including teacher training, infrastructure improvements, and digital learning initiatives.

UNESCO’s Director-General, Audrey Azoulay, stressed the urgency of inclusive education as foundational for sustainable development. “Education empowers individuals and communities, driving progress across all SDGs. We must prioritize equity to ensure no one is left behind,” she said. The report advocates for strengthened international collaboration and financing to advance education goals by 2030.
