A newly released UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) report underscores that despite advances in global education, significant gender disparities persist in many regions. Girls and young women continue to face barriers to completing secondary and tertiary education due to socio-cultural norms, early marriage, and economic factors.
The report shows that while gender parity was achieved in primary education enrollment in 2025, gaps widen at higher education levels, especially in STEM fields. In sub-Saharan Africa and parts of South Asia, dropout rates among girls remain disproportionately high.
Education experts recommend targeted interventions such as scholarships, community engagement, and inclusive curricula to combat these challenges. Closing education gender gaps is critical to achieving SDG 4 on quality education and SDG 5 on gender equality, enabling economic empowerment and social inclusion.
