Global Carbon Emissions Decline for Third Consecutive Year, UN Reports

The United Nations announced today that global carbon dioxide emissions have fallen for the third consecutive year, marking a significant milestone in the fight against climate change. According to the latest UN Environment Programme (UNEP) report, global CO2 emissions decreased by 1.8% in 2025, driven largely by increased adoption of renewable energy and improved energy efficiency in key sectors.

This decline is seen as a positive sign toward meeting the targets set under the Paris Agreement and advancing Sustainable Development Goal 13, Climate Action. Experts caution, however, that while the trend is encouraging, emissions remain well above the levels needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the need for accelerated climate action: “While we celebrate progress, the window to avoid catastrophic climate impacts is closing rapidly. Governments, businesses, and civil society must scale up efforts to transition to a net-zero economy.”

The report highlights that investments in clean energy technologies, such as solar and wind, grew by 12% globally. Despite progress, challenges remain in reducing emissions from heavy industry and transport, sectors that require innovative solutions and policy support.
