Global Food Security Gains Momentum Amidst Climate Challenges

As the world grapples with the dual challenges of climate change and population growth, recent reports indicate positive strides in global food security. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the prevalence of undernourishment declined to 7.5% in 2025, down from 8.9% in 2020. This progress is attributed to enhanced agricultural practices, increased investment in sustainable food systems, and international cooperation focusing on smallholder farmers.

Despite these gains, experts caution that climate-related disruptions remain a significant threat. Extreme weather events, such as droughts and floods, have led to localized food shortages in vulnerable regions, emphasizing the need for resilient agricultural infrastructure. The FAO recommends scaling up climate-smart agriculture and strengthening social protection programs to ensure equitable access to nutritious food.

Policy dialogues at the recent Global Sustainable Development Summit underlined the urgency of integrating food security measures with climate action strategies. Stakeholders agreed that collaborative efforts between governments, private sectors, and civil society are critical to sustaining this positive trajectory towards SDG 2: Zero Hunger.
