The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) reported today that global renewable energy capacity has exceeded 5,000 gigawatts (GW) for the first time, marking a significant milestone toward achieving SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. This growth is driven primarily by solar and wind installations, which have expanded rapidly in both developed and developing countries. Experts highlight that continued investment and supportive policies will be critical to maintain this momentum.
Despite these advances, challenges persist in grid integration and energy access for marginalized populations. The report emphasizes the need for targeted strategies to ensure equitable energy distribution and to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, innovations in energy storage and smart grids are identified as key enablers for a resilient renewable-powered future.
Dr. Fatima Al-Sayed, IRENA’s Director of Innovation, noted, “Surpassing 5,000 GW is a testament to global commitment, but we must accelerate deployment and address infrastructural barriers to make clean energy universally accessible and reliable.” Governments and private sector players are urged to collaborate closely to meet the 2030 targets under SDG 7.
