New renewable energy initiatives are rapidly increasing electricity access in rural African communities, supporting SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy). Over the past year, solar mini-grid and off-grid systems have brought power to more than two million people across countries like Kenya, Ghana, and Tanzania.
These projects leverage advances in solar technology, battery storage, and mobile payments to offer affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy solutions. Local entrepreneurs and women-led enterprises are playing a key role in deployment and maintenance, fostering economic empowerment and job creation.
The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) emphasizes that scaling clean energy access can catalyze improvements in health, education, and livelihoods. However, challenges such as upfront costs and regulatory hurdles persist.
International donors and governments are urged to enhance policy frameworks and financing support to accelerate the transition and meet universal energy access goals by 2030.
